Can Dogs Eat Tomatoes?
Short answer: a little ripe, red tomato is fine for most dogs, but the green parts are not. Stems, leaves, vines and unripe green tomatoes contain solanine and tomatine, which can make dogs sick. Keep dogs away from tomato plants.
Why tomatoes can be good for dogs
- Ripe tomatoes are low in calories (about 18 kcal per 100 g) and have vitamin C and potassium.
- A cherry tomato is about 3 kcal.
Risks of tomatoes for dogs
- Green tomatoes, stems, leaves and vines: stomach upset, drooling, weakness, and in large amounts a slow heart rate or tremors.
- Tomato sauce, ketchup, salsa and pizza often contain onion and garlic, which are toxic to dogs, plus salt.
- Acid can upset sensitive stomachs.
How to serve it
- Only ripe, red, plain tomato, washed and cut up.
- Remove any green stem.
- Fence off vegetable gardens if your dog chews plants.
How much per day by dog weight
Treats of any kind should stay under 10% of a dog's daily calories. For a spayed or neutered adult dog that budget is shown below, with how many ripe cherry tomatoes (about 3.1 kcal each) fit in it if they are the only treat that day.
| Dog's weight | Daily treat budget | Ripe cherry tomatoes per day |
|---|---|---|
| 10 lb | 35 kcal | up to 2 tomatoes |
| 20 lb | 59 kcal | up to 2 tomatoes |
| 30 lb | 79 kcal | up to 3 tomatoes |
| 50 lb | 116 kcal | up to 5 tomatoes |
| 70 lb | 150 kcal | up to 7 tomatoes |
| 90 lb | 181 kcal | up to 9 tomatoes |
The amounts for larger dogs are capped below the calorie limit, because fiber, not calories, is what causes trouble with this food.
Start with one or two pieces the first time and watch for an upset stomach. Your own dog's budget is in the dog food calculator (it shows a "treats budget" line).
